BBC Contemplates Outsourcing and Offshoring Thousands of Tech Positions

The BBC is exploring options to meet stringent cost-cutting goals by potentially outsourcing roles in technology and finance.

Reports indicate that thousands of jobs in the UK may be at risk as the broadcaster seeks substantial savings, possibly moving work overseas.

Locations such as Salford, Glasgow, Newcastle, and Cardiff could see job losses. Departments most affected may include the BBC's finance sector and its digital product group, responsible for platforms like iPlayer.

Although the BBC has not confirmed these plans, a spokesperson stated: “Like many organisations, it’s routine to assess different options that could deliver these changes, and it would be wrong to suggest decisions have been taken.”

Digital transformation at the BBC

In a speech earlier this year, Director General Tim Davie emphasized the importance of transforming the BBC through innovative technology, including the usage of artificial intelligence. He revealed that many staff already utilize AI and expressed the intent to collaborate with leading tech firms.

With an increased focus on social media, the BBC aims to boost its presence on platforms such as YouTube and TikTok, adapting to changing viewer habits and ensuring a stronger outreach in a crowded media landscape. The organization's finance department’s restructuring includes a partnership with Tata Consultancy Services to enhance efficiency.

The trend of offshoring work to countries like India is becoming more prevalent among public sector entities, driven by the attraction of lower-cost talent pools and efficient service delivery.
